Algeria’s national team coach, Vladimir Petkovic, has made a decision regarding the future of Slimani with the Fennecs!
The Algerian national team coach, Vladimir Petkovic, is considering recalling the prolific Fennecs striker, Islam Slimani, following his absence during the team’s last two camps.
This decision comes in light of Baghdad Bounedjah’s disappointing performances. Slimani, who missed the friendly matches against Bolivia and South Africa in March, as well as the World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Guinea and Uganda in June, believes he can still contribute to the national team.
Since February, the 36-year-old Slimani has been playing for the Belgian club Malines, where he has appeared in 13 matches, scoring 3 goals and providing 4 assists. His contract with Malines expires at the end of the month, prompting him to seek a new destination during this summer transfer window.
Petkovic is dissatisfied with Bounedjah’s performances, as the striker has missed crucial chances in recent matches, leading him to reconsider his attacking options. Despite giving Bounedjah an opportunity due to his African experience, his lack of goals and poor positioning have been disappointing.
Slimani, who has consistently performed well for the Fennecs, could bring the necessary experience to the team, although his return depends on his consistency at his next club. Additionally, Petkovic has observed that Amine Gouiri is more effective as a second striker rather than a center forward, which could influence the team’s future lineups.
