The recent announcement that the Algerian national football team may not participate in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in Morocco has stirred controversy in the African football community. Speculations are rife, and passions are inflamed on both sides of the border.
Moroccan media close to the Makhzen regime dropped the bombshell: Algeria is reportedly seriously considering boycotting CAN 2025 to focus exclusively on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in North America. This strategic decision is purportedly aimed at better preparing the Fennecs to face global challenges.
“One of these media outlets wrote: ‘The Algerian national football team may not take part in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled in Morocco. The Algerian Football Federation is studying this possibility to preserve its players for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Highlighting the proximity of the CAN 2025 in Morocco and the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Algeria is considering boycotting the continental tournament and focusing on its World Cup qualification.’”
“Additionally, the Algerian football governing body is reportedly exerting strong pressure on Algerian players in the Moroccan league to return to Algeria or join other leagues, according to sources. Players like Gaya Merbah from Ittihad Tanger, Ilyes Chetti and Zakaria Draoui from Wydad Athletic Club, and Riyad Benayad have thus decided to leave Morocco,” added a Moroccan media outlet.
Faced with these persistent rumors, Algerian authorities swiftly reacted to refute them. A youth and sports ministry official, contacted by Fennec Football, categorically denied any boycott plans, emphasizing the government’s unwavering commitment to support the national team in all its endeavors.
