Eliminated early at Afcon 2023, Algeria formalized the departure of Djamel Belmadi on Wednesday from his position as coach of the Fennecs. The time has come to find a replacement for the Algerian technician at the head of the team and Zinedine Zidane has given a fairly clear answer.
Algeria is in crisis, since the coronation at Afcon 2019, the Fennecs have had a string of poor results in recent competitions. Eliminated in the group stage of Afcon 2021 in Cameroon, Djamel Belmadi wanted to restore the image of the Fennecs during Afcon 2023 which is being held in Ivory Coast.
After a fairly serious preparation in Togo, Algeria was unable to qualify at the end of the group stage of Afcon 2023. After two draws against Angola and Burkina Faso, the Fennecs were beaten 0 -1 by Mauritania and finished last in the group with only 2 points on the clock. A terrible disillusionment which is not without consequences, since the FAF has decided to break the contract which binds it with Djamel Belmadi, national coach.
“I met the national coach, Mr. Djamel Belmadi, to discuss the consequences of this bitter exclusion, and we reached an amicable agreement to dissolve the association and break the contract which binds the coach to the Federation Algerian Football. We thank coach Jamel Belmadi for everything he has done for the team and we wish him good luck for the rest of his career. », Explained Walid Sadi, President of the Algerian Football Federation.
Coaching Algeria, Zidane won’t say no
After the departure of Djamel Belmadi, Algeria is currently looking for a new coach for the Fennecs. However, during a television program whose sequence is going viral on the web, we can see Zinedine Zidane talking about the Fennecs.
Asked if he would one day agree to coach the Fennecs, the former Real Madrid coach immediately responded positively and said he wanted to help Algeria.
“Will one day we see you return directly linked to the world of football? I’m going to tell you about information that came out among our colleagues in the South-West. It seems that you may have ambitions around the Algerian selection. Is it a fantasy, Zinedine Zidane, one day coach of Algeria or not? Yes, because that’s not what I want to do anyway, coaching a team today. So we can talk today, at this moment, about saying that it’s a fantasy. But on the other hand, yes, why not at some point help them in my own way and give them some little advice. This is what I will strive to do,” said Zinedine Zidane.
It must be said that this is an old video, at a time when Algeria was not in crisis, which had just won CAN 2019 with an invincibility record in Africa. Now unemployed since his departure from Real Madrid, Zidane, who wanted to coach the French team, could obviously be tempted to embark on an adventure with Algeria.
What about Hervé Renard
Since yesterday, the name of Hervé Renard has been circulating on social networks, after the dismissal of Djamel Belmadi. Even if the technician loves African football, being in Ivory Coast to follow Afcon 2023, Hervé Renard should not be excited about the position of coach of the Fennecs.
He is the coach of the French women’s team and after a fairly average World Cup, Hervé Renard has other objectives to achieve with the Marie Antoinette Katoto gang. Better, his recent history with Morocco, where he coached the team, could be an obstacle to an appointment on the Fennecs bench, when we know the rivalry that exists between Algeria and Morocco.
