As the end of 2024 approaches, the suspense is building around the finalists for the prestigious African Ballon d’Or, which honors the continent’s top talents.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed that the 2024 CAF Awards will take place on Monday, December 16, in Marrakech, Morocco. During this much-anticipated evening, the African Player of the Year award will reveal its new winner.

Guirassy and Lookman in the Spotlight

Five finalists are in the running for this ultimate honor:

  • Simon Adindra (Brighton), the Ivorian and reigning African champion with the Elephants.
  • Serhou Guirassy (Dortmund), the Guinean prolific striker, considered the favorite.
  • Ademola Lookman (Atalanta), the Nigerian who played a key role in his club’s Europa League triumph.
  • Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns), the exceptional South African goalkeeper.
  • Achraf Hakimi (PSG), the Moroccan full-back recently crowned Lion d’Or by Al Mountakhab newspaper.

Last year, the trophy was won by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, succeeding Senegalese forward Sadio Mané, a two-time winner in 2019 and 2022. Mané had previously taken over from Mohamed Salah, who claimed the title in 2017 and 2018.

Six Other Awards to Be Honored

Alongside the African Player of the Year, six other categories will be recognized:

  • Goalkeeper of the Year
  • Interclub Player of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Young Player of the Year
  • Club of the Year
  • National Team of the Year
