The Ballon d’Or rankings certainly seem to have left few people satisfied—Rodri being an exception. Lautaro Martinez, too, voiced disappointment over his position.
Since Monday, the announcement of the 2024 Ballon d’Or has continued to stir up strong reactions. Real Madrid even went as far as boycotting the ceremony, firmly believing that Vinicius deserved the title. The release of journalists’ votes has only fueled a flurry of sharp critiques, with some players themselves struggling to accept their final rankings.
“Sometimes, these awards are unfair.”
This sentiment was echoed by Lautaro Martinez, the Argentine forward for Inter Milan. A crucial player for the team that won Serie A last May and a decisive scorer in the Copa America final against Colombia (1-0 after extra time), Lautaro believed he deserved a higher ranking than seventh place, behind players like Mbappé and Erling Haaland. In an interview with DAZN, he expressed his disappointment: “To be honest, I expected better than a 7th place in the Ballon d’Or. Sometimes, these awards are unfair. I’ll work even harder to improve my position,” the forward shared.
The Ballon d’Or rankings appear to have pleased only Rodri. Lautaro Martinez, on the other hand, voiced his disappointment with his position, likely expecting a more favorable ranking.
