On the set of L’Équipe du Soir, Vincent Garcia commented on Rodri winning the Ballon d’Or 2024. The editor-in-chief of France Football stated that the secret had been kept until the ceremony, expressing his confusion regarding Real Madrid’s absence.
He praised Rodri as a “beautiful” and “historic” winner, highlighting that he is the first Spaniard to claim the award since 1960—a rarity for a defensive midfielder. Rodri edged out Vinicius Jr. and two other Real Madrid players, with Vinicius vowing to come back stronger.
“It was a close victory; it was decided by a narrow margin,” Garcia noted. He added that Vinicius likely suffered from the presence of Bellingham and Carvajal in the top five, which may have cost him valuable points. “This reflects Real’s season, supported by three or four key players, and the votes were split among them, benefiting Rodri.”
Garcia also stated that nobody was informed in advance, neither at Real Madrid nor at Manchester City: “Rodri’s emotion on stage is the best proof of this surprise, putting an end to rumors of a potential leak.” According to him, there was intense pressure, with the clubs of the favorites pushing for information.
He mentioned experiencing significant pressure from Real Madrid, but like with other clubs, he adhered to the silence rule: “Perhaps my silence influenced their decision, but I have always been transparent with everyone.” However, he expressed that he was “very unpleasantly surprised” by Real Madrid’s decision to boycott the ceremony, suggesting it might have been a bluff.
