It’s the big day for the Ballon d’Or ceremony! With just a few hours to go before the presentation of the prestigious trophy, a revelation has been made about the name of the winner.
This Monday, October 28, 2024, the 68th winner of the Ballon d’Or will be officially unveiled. Lionel Messi, the current holder with 8 titles to his name, will be dethroned this evening. But ahead of that evening at the Théâtre du Châtelet, news reports suggest that the winner may have let his name slip.
Vinicius Jr drops the news
After scoring an impressive hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund on the third day of the Champions League (a 5-2 victory for Real Madrid), Vinicius Junior struggled in Saturday’s Clasico against Barcelona, where the Culés won 4-0. At the Santiago Bernabéu, the Brazilian was provoked by Barcelona midfielder Gavi, who kept reminding him of the scoreline with “4-0, 4-0” at the end of the match.
Angered, Vinicius could not keep the secret of the Ballon d’Or, perhaps revealed by France Football a few days earlier. According to El Chiringuito, the Madrid striker responded to Gavi by declaring that he would be picking up his Ballon d’Or in Paris on Monday. “Yes, yes, but on Monday, I’m going to win the Ballon d’Or,” he reportedly replied.
Vinicius Junior is one of the big favourites for this year’s tournament, and is one of the 30 players shortlisted by France Football. Several players, including Inigo Martinez and Jules Koundé, also see the Brazilian as Messi’s successor.
Final confirmation will come this evening at the eagerly-awaited ceremony.
