The date of the Ballon d’Or ceremony posed a challenge for the U.S. women’s team, as they were playing matches in the United States this week and therefore couldn’t attend the event in Paris. The organizers have committed to considering this factor in the future.

Real Madrid wasn’t the only notable absence at the Ballon d’Or ceremony. Players from the U.S. national women’s team were also missing, but for a valid reason: they are currently involved in a series of friendly matches across the Atlantic.

For the U.S. coach, holding the ceremony during an international window for women’s football is problematic. “It would be like hosting the Oscars or the Golden Globes without any women present,” lamented England’s Emma Hayes. “It simply wouldn’t happen. Yet, this issue is all too often addressed only after the fact.”

The date of the Ballon d’Or ceremony may soon be changed

Due to a poorly adjusted schedule, the coach was unable to accept her award for Coach of the Year in person. Additionally, her players—four of whom ranked in the Ballon d’Or’s Top 10 after winning gold at the Olympics this summer—were also unable to attend the event.

“For these players and coaches, it’s the only chance in this field to receive such recognition, so it’s disappointing,” said Emma Hayes. “I discussed this with the organizers, who assured me that things would change in the future. Let’s hope that’s true.”
