UEFA condemned on Saturday the spread of false information circulating on social media, which attributed statements to its president allegedly justifying the decision not to award the 2024 Ballon d’Or to Vinicius Junior.
Following Rodri’s controversial Ballon d’Or win this week, which came at the expense of Vinicius Junior, widely regarded as the favorite, numerous accusations targeting UEFA have surfaced in the media. Several Spanish newspapers have suggested a possible maneuver orchestrated by European football’s governing body and its president, Alexander Ceferin.
In practice, Real Madrid had circulated in the press sharp comments attributed to Ceferin, allegedly criticizing Vinicius Junior and claiming the Brazilian didn’t deserve the trophy. Notably, this was the first time UEFA co-hosted the Ballon d’Or ceremony alongside the Amaury Group, owner of France Football and L’Équipe.
UEFA categorically denies the accusations
After remaining silent until now, the organization finally spoke up. In a statement sent this Saturday to the Spanish news agency EFE, UEFA dismissed all accusations and indicated that it is considering legal action against those responsible for spreading this misinformation. “We categorically deny the allegations of supposed comments from UEFA regarding the Ballon d’Or results. Neither UEFA nor its president has issued any statements or comments on this matter,” the statement read.
