On the transfer market since leaving Liverpool, Joël Matip is seeking a new club to revive his career after a season sidelined due to injury.
The Cameroonian defender, sought after in Germany, England, Italy, and even Saudi Arabia, has yet to make a decision on his future just weeks before the start of the season. Agbor Hans, former Cameroonian international, spoke exclusively to Africafoot on what path the indomitable Lion should take next in his career. Hans emphasized the importance for Matip, 32 years old and coming off nearly a season without playing, to prioritize a club where he will get significant playing time to rejuvenate his career:
“Joël has been out for a season and he is 32 years old. It would be ideal for him to sign with a club where he will have considerable playing time to help him revive. Therefore, I would advise him to make a choice in that direction.”
Regarding the choice of league, Hans, currently assistant coach of the Central African Republic, was clear. He believes Matip should return to where it all began:
“After spending almost 10 years at Liverpool and considering his age, it would be wiser for him to return to Germany. There, he won’t have language adaptation issues, for example, and will be immediately immersed. So I would recommend a return to the Bundesliga, especially with a team where he can play regularly. However, I don’t know his plans, so he could make a completely different choice.”
Joël Matip, valued at 8 million euros by Transfermarkt, must make a decision about his future in the coming days. Courted across Europe, the 1994 World Cup participant believes he should settle in a stable environment where he can play regularly. Ultimately, a final decision is still awaited.
