Former Indomitable Lions midfielder Alex Song has finally explained the incident involving his unsportsmanlike conduct against Mario Mandzukic during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Cameroon faced Croatia in a group stage match, and the former Barça player was in the starting lineup for the Cameroonian team.

During the match, Alex Song elbowed the former Munich striker Mario Mandzukic in the back, much to everyone’s surprise.

He was sent off, and ever since, many observers have been wondering what really happened.

The former Cameroonian international recently spoke out on the matter and admitted that he lost his temper that day. “Those who don’t play football can’t understand. Sometimes, you react without meaning to; it’s just emotions.

It’s something that happens spontaneously. Before that incident, it was Mbia who elbowed Mandzukic near the corner flag, but it wasn’t seen.

When they were on the counter-attack and I wanted to speed up to intercept the play, he blocked my path, and I had a bad reflex, elbowing him. It wasn’t something I had planned,” the former Gunner stated.

Eight years after the incident, Alex Song believes that one needs to be a footballer to understand what went through his mind at that moment.

Nevertheless, the player has repeatedly expressed regret for his unsportsmanlike conduct, acknowledging that it was not a good example for his children who were watching the match as well.
