Former Cameroonian international Assou-Ekotto recently discussed in an interview what he missed out on by not signing with the French national team.
The former Indomitable Lion, speaking to Philippe Simo, clearly outlined the reasons behind his choice to play for his home country, Cameroon, despite the qualities he could have brought to France.
“I decided to play for Cameroon at a very young age. I had nothing to do with the French team. I have never regretted this choice.
Except for the money, because I play for money. I play to put my family in the best conditions. But I prefer to be like that,” he stated.
He then delved further, adding:
“Why did I choose Cameroon? Whatever you do, in France or in Europe, it’s a bit of a religious and migratory flow war. When you’re bronzed or black, people don’t necessarily want you here. I have always been reminded that I am not French, and I have accepted it.
I don’t see the point of proudly wearing the jersey of a national team when since childhood, you have been reminded that you are not French. And then, the more you educate yourself and observe, you realize that the black man doesn’t really think much.
When you read and learn that France committed genocide in Cameroon, how could you proudly wear that jersey?
When you are Congolese and you play for Belgium, while there is a man who has cut off, I don’t know how many hands and feet in Congo… What goes through your mind to proudly wear that jersey? You really have to be stupid.”
