After the violent altercation between the now former coach of the Indomitable Lions, Marc Brys, and the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot), Samuel Eto’o, Fécafoot has made a decision:
Brys is sacked and replaced by Martin Ndtoungou Mpile as interim coach. The latter has made his first significant decision and announces his squad.
The suspension of the Lions’ coach follows a viral video showing Eto’o and Brys engaged in a heated discussion. While the official reasons for Brys’ dismissal have been communicated, it is clear that this incident hastened his departure. Indeed, tensions between Brys and Fécafoot had been simmering since his appointment by the Ministry of Sports, without Eto’o’s approval.
This choice, perceived as political interference in the Federation’s affairs, had created tensions from the outset. However, the arrival of Mpile, a former coach of Cameroon’s youth teams, is seen as a move towards appeasement, aiming to ensure continuity at the helm of the national team, just weeks before important fixtures. Martin Ndtoungou Mpile is already taking action.
In this tumultuous context, Martin Ndtoungou Mpile was urgently summoned by Fécafoot to take charge of the national team. He has a press conference scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, May 30th, where he will unveil the list of players selected for the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifying matches: hosting Cape Verde on June 8th and traveling to Angola on June 11th.
“Martin Ndtoungou Mpile, the interim coach of the Cameroon Indomitable Lions, will hold a press conference on Thursday, May 30, 2024, starting at 11 am in the conference room of the Cameroonian Football Federation. He will take this opportunity to reveal the list of players selected for the two matches against Cape Verde and Angola, on June 8th and 11th respectively in Yaoundé and Luanda, for the 3rd and 4th rounds of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers,” officially communicated Fécafoot on Wednesday. This announcement will be closely watched as it will provide an initial glimpse into Mpile’s choices and playing philosophy. After the turbulence with Brys, Cameroonian supporters have high expectations for this experienced coach, who has previously worked with the Indomitable Lions’ youth teams.

Beyond the sporting aspect, Martin Mpile’s assumption of duty also holds significant institutional importance. By appointing a Cameroonian coach, Fécafoot sends a strong signal of its intention to regain control over the management of the national team. After the political interference in the coach selection, Samuel Eto’o and his team aim to assert their authority and vision for Cameroonian football.
Brys’ dismissal clearly aligns with this reaffirmation of the Federation’s role.
There are also major sporting stakes for Martin Mpile and the Indomitable Lions. With two crucial matches ahead in the World Cup qualifiers, the objective will be to secure maximum points to enhance their chances of qualification. Now, it remains to be seen if Martin Mpile can rise to the sporting challenge ahead. With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon, the new interim coach will have the mission of laying the foundations for an ambitious team capable of shining on the continental stage.
