Former Paris Saint-Germain player Hugo Ekitike has turned down Cameroon’s offer to join the Indomitable Lions.

Solicited by Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot), and by Marc Brys, the recent coach, during their consultation tour with international and dual-national players, Ekitike has made his decision known. According to information reported by Le Monde, the 21-year-old promising striker, who scored this weekend for Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany where he has been loaned with an option to buy by PSG since February, has declined the invitation.

Ekitike aspires to play for the French team, and Marc Brys respects Ekitike’s choice. “We must respect his decision,” Brys declared, as cited by a French newspaper. Born in Reims to a Cameroonian father, the former French youth international has always dreamed of joining the French team, according to the same source.

This news is a real blow to Cameroonian supporters, notably former player Alex Song, who had already imagined him joining the Indomitable Lions, like many fans. “Vincent Aboubakar has long been our reference center-forward in Cameroon. He has contributed a lot, but he is declining. Ekitike is young and deserves his chance. The national team is different from the club; here, he could learn from Vincent Aboubakar. I’m not worried about him; he will bring a lot. We have young talents emerging. He must be given his chance,” passionately expressed Rigobert Song’s nephew in mid-April.

As for former Reims player Hugo Ekitike, it seems that the chapter with the Cameroonian team is closed for him, but this is not the case for Carlos Baleba, the young defensive midfielder from Brighton. At 20 years old, with 35 appearances, including 15 as a starter for his first season in southern England, the prospects are encouraging. According to Le Monde, the signs are positive for this Douala native, who had so far hesitated to answer his country’s call. The former Lille player seems well on his way to making Brys’ first list for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
