Hugo Ekitike’s agent has responded amidst reports that his client may have shut the door on the Cameroon team.

At the end of his European tour, during which he engaged with several internationals and dual nationals eligible for the Cameroon team, coach Marc Brys reportedly came to terms with Hugo Ekitike’s situation.

Despite Brys’ charm offensive, succeeding Samuel Eto’o as the coach, the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), the Eintracht Frankfurt striker is said to be envisioning his future with the French team after stints with the youth teams (U20 and U21). This was hinted at by Brys in an interview with Le Monde on Tuesday.

“Ekitike has never said anything to anyone”

However, despite the clear indication that his potential call-up to Marc Brys’ likely squad was unlikely, whose status is still not approved by either Fecafoot or FIFA, the former Parisian saw his agent firmly deny the rumors. “Hugo Ekitike has never said anything to anyone about this, neither to the Lions’ coach nor to the media,” the businessman responded, as quoted by the specialized account AllezLesLions on Wednesday. This throws another twist into the speculation, but more importantly, it reignites hope among Cameroonian supporters of seeing the Reims-born player represent his ancestral team (his father is Cameroonian).

However, before that can happen, the question of the coach, or at least the coaching staff, needs to be definitively resolved. Heavily criticized by Eto’o, the coaching staff is expected to undergo significant changes, especially considering the latest reports suggesting that the former star may have won his battle against the Ministry of Sports, which had imposed Brys on him. These remarks may primarily serve as a way to keep the door open to Cameroon in case the call from the French team never materializes…
