After the incident on Tuesday morning at the headquarters of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot), the body, as anticipated, announced in the evening the suspension of coach Marc Brys and his replacement by an interim coach, further exacerbating the already untenable situation surrounding the team.
As the meeting convened by Fécafoot turned sour with coach Marc Brys on Tuesday morning, the Ministry of Sports initially indicated its intention to take control. Indeed, it announced via a statement in the evening the convening of a meeting on Wednesday, in preparation for the upcoming qualifying matches of the Indomitable Lions for the 2026 World Cup.
“The Minister of Sports and Physical Education will chair an important preparatory meeting on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, starting at 2 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, in anticipation of the two international matches between the Indomitable Lions and the national teams of Cape Verde and Angola, respectively, on June 8 and 11, 2024, in Yaoundé and Luanda,” the statement signed by Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi reads.
The opportunity for the political sphere to invite Fécafoot: “As is tradition, this meeting, to which the Cameroonian Football Federation and the usual partner administrations are invited, will focus on the preparations in technical, sporting, logistical, administrative, and consular matters related to the organization of the aforementioned two matches,” it continues. Given the heated exchange earlier in the morning, first between Eto’o and the envoy of Minister Cyrille Tollo, then between the former striker and Brys, Fécafoot’s boycott of this meeting was very likely. Especially since, following the said exchanges, Minister Kombi reaffirmed the staff appointed by him – and not recognized by Eto’o – in their positions. “I can assure you that you are the staff. Stay calm, things will fall into place, don’t worry,” he told Brys at the ministry after the confrontation with Eto’o, as reported by L’Equipe.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the situation escalated with the appointment in the evening of an interim coach by Eto’o, namely Martin Ndtoungou Mpile, and his assistant Pagou David.
In a statement, the second of the day after the one detailing his altercation with Brys, the head of Fécafoot justified the “urgency of preparing for the June matches,” while emphasizing the “disrespectful remarks” made against him by the Flemish coach, who was consequently suspended. Given the unfolding of this saga, it’s anyone’s guess who will be sitting on the bench at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium on June 8.
