After a photo of André Onana and his brother surfaced online, it sparked a significant controversy. The striking resemblance between the two brothers surprised many internet users. Ivorian media outlet Amarhal Tv posted on their Facebook page:
“When Manchester United finds out they signed André Onana but it’s his brother who played all the matches, things will heat up. Otherwise, André Onana, as I know him, wouldn’t let in so many goals.”
This statement prompted reactions from users, one of whom commented: “André Onana is the lighter-skinned of the two. The other one is a bit darker, probably because Cameroon’s water makes you very dark.” It’s important to note that this isn’t the first time Ivorian Facebook pages have teased the Cameroonian goalkeeper.
Weeks earlier, administrators of the “Allez les Éléphants” page also mocked Onana’s performance during Cameroon’s match against Cape Verde in the World Cup 2026 qualifiers.
The match ended with Cameroon winning 4-1, with Onana conceding only one goal, contributing to Cameroon’s victory. Despite this, he faced criticism.
On the Ivorian Facebook page “Allez les Éléphants,” a post read: “Onana is a very good goalkeeper. His only problem is when shots are on target.”
This post angered Cameroonians, who then began to criticize Ivorians in the comments. Here are some of their reactions:
“It will take another half-century for Côte d’Ivoire to have an internationally competitive goalkeeper like A. Onana.”
