The new coach of Cameroon, Belgian Marc Brys, is making multiple trips to Europe to convince some dual-nationality players to wear the “Indomitable Lions” jersey.
Rigobert Song’s successor aims to field a solid team in Cameroon’s upcoming matches against Cape Verde and Angola, in the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
Leading Group D alongside Cape Verde with 4 points, the five-time African champions aim for a 9th appearance in the World Cup finals. The new boss of the “Indomitable Lions” will seek to tap into the inexhaustible pool of dual-nationality players plying their trade across the globe.
What about Joel Matip?
The Liverpool player retired from international duty with Cameroon for personal reasons.
His last appearance dates back to 2015, specifically in the match against Gambia in the AFCON qualifiers.
With Marc Brys now at the helm as the new coach, the situation has completely changed, and the Bochum native might be tempted to return to the “Den”.
As a reminder, Joel Matip has amassed 27 caps for the “Indomitable Lions,” scoring just one goal.
