The French coach asserts that there have been many lies circulated about him, but he never discussed salaries with the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), Samuel Eto’o.

In an interview with our colleagues at the French newspaper Jeune Afrique, Hervé Renard, one of the coaches in contention for the position of Manager and head coach of the Indomitable Lions, emphasized that he never discussed salary expectations with Samuel Eto’o, the current president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot).

“I have had no financial discussions with anyone. I met Samuel Eto’o in France, but at no point did we talk about money […] I also read that I had requested an advance on this salary. These are lies,” he stressed in the columns of Jeune Afrique. This statement by the French coach is a clear rebuke to the current executive of Fecafoot.

In a letter from Narcisse Mouelle Kombi dated April 6, 2024, addressed to the President of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), it was revealed that the three applications submitted by Samuel Eto’o for the position of head coach of the Indomitable Lions each presented exorbitant salary expectations, ranging from approximately 1 billion to 1.6 billion CFA francs.

“(€1,500,000) to 1.6 billion CFA francs (€2,500,000) of remuneration (excluding various bonuses) per year, representing respectively on average 82,000,000 CFA francs to 132,000,000 CFA francs per month. These amounts are excessive and have never been paid to any coach in the history of the Indomitable Lions,” explained Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, in his letter.

Herve Renard was earning 265 million CFA francs per year.

The Minister of Sports, Kombi Mouelle, revealed that Samuel Eto’o requested the Cameroonian government to pay coaches between 1 billion and 1.6 billion CFA francs, without bonuses. Among these applications was that of the French coach Hervé Renard. “If his application had been accepted by the Cameroonian government under the conditions proposed by Fecafoot, Hervé Renard would have received a salary six times higher than his current salary with the French team.”

Indeed, according to information from the French newspaper Le Figaro, Hervé Renard’s annual salary is estimated at €400,000, or 260 million CFA francs. In Cameroon, he would have earned 1.6 billion CFA francs, which is 6 times more than his salary in France. Leading the French women’s team, Herve Renard earned 265 million CFA francs per year. In Saudi Arabia, he earned 721 million CFA francs per year. Samuel Eto’o requested Cameroon to pay him 1.6 billion CFA francs per year, to be paid two weeks before taking office, explained the minister’s note.
