Marc Brys, far from being a household name in the football world, was parachuted in as the head coach of the Cameroon national team, courtesy of FECAFOOT.

Amidst tensions, he was confirmed before, on Tuesday, Samuel Eto’o decided to sideline him. While his situation remains unresolved, Afrique Sports delves into his wealth.

Cameroonian football is going through an unprecedented crisis. The appointment of coach Marc Brys, chosen by the Ministry of Sports but not accepted by FECAFOOT, of which Samuel Eto’o is the president, is shocking. Inevitably, the two main players in this unstable situation have clashed, with an altercation quickly circulating on the web this Tuesday.

This altercation, which dealt a fatal blow to Cameroonian football, quickly went viral with strong reactions from Cameroonians. Faced with a situation too chaotic for a structure that should project a strong and professional image, FECAFOOT has made a decision. It announced the appointment of Martin Ndtongou Mpile as interim coach, sidelining Marc Brys. Brys responded on Wednesday, highlighting that Samuel Eto’o had overstepped. “He clearly went too far. I work for the Ministry of Sports, not the federation,” he said. While the matter remains officially unresolved, Afrique Sports, exploring financial successes in football every Wednesday, delves into Marc Brys’s story.

The Belgian coach is one of many figures in Belgian football who had a playing career before transitioning to coaching. With a career spanning several years, Marc Brys amassed a notable fortune through various football experiences. Brys began his playing career in the 1980s, mainly in Belgium. Comparing his earnings to those of current players, the gap is substantial. At the time, the current coach of the “Indomitable Lions” (suspended by FECAFOOT) earned around €100,000 per year. On average, during his years in Belgium, he earned approximately €75,000 per year for nearly 10 years. His playing career brought in a total of €750,000 after taxes. After deciding to end his playing career, Marc Brys quickly transitioned to coaching.

He started this new venture with positions in Belgian lower division clubs before reaching the top level. It was when he landed a head coach position that his earnings saw a significant increase. Brys led teams like KV Mechelen and STVV (Saint-Trond), earning up to €200,000 per year. The coach didn’t stop in Belgium as he ventured to Saudi Arabia.

Managing foreign teams, especially those in the Middle East, is often highly lucrative. Marc Brys earned nearly €6 million from his stints at Al-Faisaly FC, Najran SC, and Al-Raed FC. Adding up these earnings, Marc Brys was able to pocket €11.75 million. Additionally, there are the €35,000 monthly earnings he receives since taking over the “Indomitable Lions”, money he continues to receive as he has not officially been relieved of his duties yet.
