FC Nantes defender Jean-Charles Castelletto takes immense pride in his Cameroonian heritage. Formerly a French youth international, Jean-Charles Castelletto ultimately opted for Cameroon’s senior national team, where he has been playing for several years now.
Born in France to a Spanish father and Cameroonian mother, Jean-Charles Castelletto could have dreamed of representing either Les Bleus or La Roja. However, in the end, he chose his mother’s homeland.
In an interview with 90Football, the defender expressed his deep pride in his Cameroonian roots. “At Bretigny, I wore the number 4 because I was a fan of Cameroon and Rigobert Song. I had the sleeveless jersey (of Cameroon). I am now very proud to wear the colors of Cameroon. Since I was young, I’ve been going to Cameroon. My mother is Cameroonian.
Every vacation, I would go to Cameroon. It’s part of me. Everyone who knows me knows that I have a very African side to me. We’re from Yaoundé, from the Efoulan neighborhood. I’m from the village of Mom. I remember having a conversation with my grandmother when I was 12-13 years old. She told me, ‘One day, you might be like Eto’o.’ I laughed. I’m not like Eto’o, but just to play for Cameroon, I think they are proud.”
Jean-Charles Castelletto is a central defender currently playing for FC Nantes in the French Ligue 1. Having been through CS Brétigny, AJ Auxerre, Club Brugge, Red Star, Brest, and Royal Mouscron, he joined the Cameroon national team after progressing through all the youth categories of the French national team.
