Selected by Rigobert Song, François-Régis Mughe (19) turned down his call-up. The young Cameroonian looks back on this episode.
François-Régis Mughe was called up to play for Cameroon, but decided not to take part in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The OM striker’s decision caused a stir in Cameroon.
What were the real reasons behind the young player’s decision not to represent his country at this continental competition? François-Régis Mughe discusses his reasons for not joining the Indomitable Lions for the CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
“I had problems with my hamstring. When the list for the African Cup of Nations came out, I was happy. But I called the coach to ask him if he could call up another deserving player because I’m not at 100%. I regretted my choice because if I hadn’t been injured I would have had to leave.
I preferred to take better care of myself. But I’d like to apologise for turning down an African Cup of Nations. All I want to do is stay and play for my national team and show what I can do for my country,” said the Cameroonian nugget in an interview with Kick Off Le Mag.
