Marc Brys finds himself embroiled in a massive controversy in Cameroon. Following the confusion surrounding his appointment, he has now clashed with the president of FECAFOOT, Samuel Eto’o.
Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT), publicly confronted Marc Brys on Tuesday, who was appointed as the head coach of the Cameroonian national team against his will, reportedly on the instruction of the head of state. The video of their altercation has since gone viral on social media.
As the newly appointed coach of Cameroon, Marc Brys was summoned to the headquarters of the Cameroonian Football Federation on Tuesday for a meeting. There, he met with the federation president, Samuel Eto’o. The exchange between the two men quickly escalated into a confrontation.
Initially, Eto’o decided to dismiss Cyrille Tollo, the technical advisor to the Minister of Sports, who had prohibited him from engaging with Brys. After a surreal exchange with Tollo, whom he had eventually escorted out by security, the former striker continued his tirade with Brys, urging him to stay at the table. However, the Belgian coach, accompanied by his equally composed assistant, Joachim Mununga, decided to leave the premises after this bizarre sequence.
“He clearly crossed the line there. I work for the Ministry of Sports, not for the federation,” explained Marc Brys to reporters from La Dernière Heure.
For several days, Cameroonian football has been embroiled in a complex situation, partly caused by FECAFOOT and a power struggle between its president, Samuel Eto’o, and the government, particularly concerning the appointment of the next coach for the Indomitable Lions. All this turmoil comes at a time when Cameroon is set to face Cape Verde on June 3rd.
