Free and with a desire to stay in England, Joel Matip is attracting interest from several clubs including Bournemouth.

Former Liverpool defender Joel Matip is not yet ready to leave the Premier League. The 32-year-old free agent defender is expected to sign for an English club in the coming weeks.

The Sun claims that Matip is “top of the list” and a “key transfer target” for AFC Bournemouth, with manager Andoni Iraola identifying him as someone who “can help take his Cherries team to the next level.” The Premier League club is looking to strengthen its defensive line with the recruitment of the Cameroonian international.

Matip has earned 27 caps for Cameroon, scoring against Brazil in the World Cup, before retiring from international duty in 2015. Speaking about the defender, Klopp said: “In all the years I’ve been involved in football, I’m not sure I’ve met too many players more loved than Joel Matip.

I’m not even sure it would be possible to say anything bad about him. A wonderful professional, a wonderful footballer, and a wonderful human being – we’ve been lucky to have him with us for as long as we have, and now all we can do is wish him good luck as he moves in a new direction.”

He added: “If there was one person who wouldn’t care if he was underestimated, it would be Joel, but the truth is we couldn’t rate him any higher.”
