Joël Matip is set to leave Liverpool. The Cameroonian defender is embarking on a new challenge after eight years with the English club.
It’s the end of an era for Joël Matip at Liverpool. The central defender from Cameroon will depart the Merseyside club eight years after his arrival. Having clinched numerous titles with Liverpool, Matip is bidding farewell to the club.
At 32 years old, having been with the club since 2016, he has been a key figure in Klopp’s era of success, starting in the Champions League triumph of 2018-2019, which led to a title, and throughout the Premier League-winning season in 2020.
“Joel Matip will bid farewell to the Reds this summer after a period of eight seasons during which he helped the club experience some of its most memorable modern moments,” Liverpool stated.
Hampered by injuries in the last two seasons, the Cameroonian is currently recovering from a cruciate ligament rupture suffered in December. Over his eight seasons, all under the guidance of the German coach, he has secured 7 titles. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in the career of the former Indomitable Lion.
