Karl Mwalako Buchmann, the agent of Hugo Ekitike, denies any exchange between his player and Marc Brys.
Which national team will Hugo Ekitike play for? The Eintracht Frankfurt striker, born in France to a Cameroonian father, is eligible to play for both the Indomitable Lions and Didier Deschamps’ Les Bleus. Courted for several months by Cameroon and its president Samuel Eto’o, the French-Cameroonian forward reportedly declined the invitation to join the Lions’ den, according to the new Cameroon coach Marc Brys. Indeed, there was a statement from the Belgian coach suggesting that Hugo had chosen not to represent Cameroon.
However, this information was refuted by the player’s agent, Karl Mwalako Buchmann. A few hours after the comments from the new coach of the Indomitable Lions stating that Hugo Ekitike had turned down Cameroon, the Eintracht Frankfurt forward, through his agent, denied having refused the Lions in favor of the French team.
“Hugo Ekitike has never said anything to anyone about this, neither to the coach of the Indomitable Lions nor to the media. Thank you,” wrote Karl Mwalako Buchmann on X.
Ekitike himself validated this denial by responding with “thank you” to his agent’s tweet. The 21-year-old player’s future in terms of national team selection therefore does not seem to be settled yet. Recently transferred to Eintracht Frankfurt, Hugo Ekitike has another sporting choice to make.
With French and Cameroonian nationality, the former PSG striker will have to choose his next national team. So far, the former Reims player has played six matches for the French U20 team (in 2021 and 2022) and was called up once for the U21 team, at the end of 2021 as a replacement for Amine Gouiri, although he did not play.
In which national team will the former Stade de Reims player therefore evolve?
