Erik ten Hag has chosen to bring André Onana to Manchester United this summer, with the goalkeeper backing the manager amid lingering doubts about his long-term future.

André Onana believes Erik ten Hag “has done enough to support himself” amid persistent doubts about the future of the Manchester United boss. The Cameroonian goalkeeper reunited with the Dutch manager this summer after signing from Inter Milan. The pair had previously worked together at Ajax, and Onana has been chosen to succeed David de Gea. He has also retained the trust of his manager despite a difficult start at Old Trafford.

Manchester United appears poised to miss out on Champions League qualification, with Ten Hag unable to build upon his promising first season. The dressing room could therefore become divided as the coach seeks to defend his methods, which threaten to sow discord.

The Red Devils coach also believes the club’s lengthy injury list has not been sufficiently taken into account, with Onana stating that “football has no memory” after Ten Hag managed to end the club’s trophy drought last season.

He told Sky Sports, “Football has no memory. You do well today and yesterday, tomorrow you don’t do well and they will always remember what you did last time. And unfortunately, you can’t change that. Erik is a very good manager, I’m not here to support him because he’s already big enough to support himself.”
