In a Facebook Live session, Cameroonian journalist Rémy Ngono explains why Samuel Eto’o was not suspended by CAF.
Samuel Eto’o is facing a new challenge: an investigation by CAF into suspicions of match-fixing in the Cameroonian championship. On April 17, 2024, the president of FECAFOOT was expected in Cairo for questioning on this matter. CAF itself had stated that it had “received written statements from several stakeholders in Cameroonian football to examine and investigate certain alleged inappropriate behaviors by Mr. Samuel Eto’o.”
Several sources suggest that the CAF executive committee will render its verdict in the context of an investigation opened by the African football governing body into the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) for match-fixing and corruption. However, according to Cameroonian journalist Rémy Ngono, CAF will not be able to suspend Samuel Eto’o: “Motsepe and Monsengo believed they could easily suspend Samuel Eto’o. They saw there was a lot of opposition. They couldn’t get unanimity. And so, Samuel Eto’o’s case was no longer a priority. If Samuel Eto’o is to be punished, it can only be by FIFA. Name me a single federation president who has been suspended by CAF? Give me a name, maybe I’ve forgotten one. And FIFA, to sanction you, goes through the ethics committee. And it’s this ethics committee that must hear you.”
