At the helm of the Cameroon Football Association (Fecafoot) for three years now, Samuel Eto’o has other ambitions. According to the local press, the legend has surprised everyone by applying for a more important post than Fecafoot.

The legend of African football and current President of the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot), Samule Eto’o, has surprised the sporting world by applying to become a member of the Executive Committee (Comex) of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). This announcement marks a turning point in his commitment to the governance of African football, three years after taking over at the helm of Fecafoot in December 2021.

Often seen as a man of challenges, Eto’o seems determined to extend his influence beyond Cameroon’s borders.  In this race for the Comex, the former Blaugrana player will have to face a well-known opponent: Seidou Mbombo Njoya, his predecessor at the head of Fecafoot. Njoya, currently outgoing vice-president of CAF, has a certain amount of experience within the continental institution. However, his candidacy could be weakened by past controversies, notably a conviction for violating CAF’s ethical principles and a six-month suspension by FIFA.

Motsepe and CAF advocate stability, bad news for Eto’o?

While Samuel Eto’o has ambitions to join the Comex, Patrice Motsepe, the current president of CAF, is currently the only candidate for his own succession. His leadership, marked by initiatives to strengthen the development of African football, would appear to put him in a strong position for a second term.  If Eto’o succeeds in joining the Comex, he could play a decisive role in CAF’s future reforms and projects, bringing his vision and experience as a top-level player.

But at CAF, stability is the order of the day. While the South African giant is the only candidate to succeed him, Motsepe would like to continue with his team. This would compromise Samuel Eto’o’s victory over his compatriot Seidou Mbombo Njoya, the CAF President’s right-hand man. In any case, Samuel Eto’o will have to convince the members of UNIFFAC and other geographical areas of his ability to represent the interests of Central Africa within CAF. His record at Fecafoot, while hailed for certain reforms, has also been marked by controversy and criticism of administrative management. He will have to show that these experiences have strengthened his determination and competence to meet the challenges at continental level.
