A tumultuous meeting between Cameroon’s coach, Marc Brys, and the president of the Fecafoot, Samuel Eto’o, has exposed deep tensions in Cameroonian football. Despite a promising start with warm handshakes, the session quickly descended into melodrama.
Samuel Eto’o criticized the technical advisor of the Ministry of Sports for preventing a one-on-one exchange with Marc Brys, asserting his authority as the sole boss. Despite the tensions, Samuel Eto’o insisted that Brys should stay, contradicting the ministry and putting the coach in a delicate position.
The incredible clash between Samuel Eto’o and Marc Brys
The exchanges turned acrimonious when Samuel Eto’o reminded Brys of his ultimate decision-making power as president of the Fecafoot, threatening severe consequences if he did not comply with his demands. It seems unlikely that the two men can work together in the future, plunging Cameroonian football into uncertainty about its immediate future.
Faced with this situation, Cameroonians did not remain indifferent. Many reacted. “They think they’re in Belgium, or something, and Eto’o is nothing, do you see what you’re doing,” commented Bobo on Twitter. Henry Tirla also commented and supported Samuel Eto’o: “Thank you Eto’o. Get rid of this coach, we don’t disrespect a legend.”
“Yes, that’s it, Cameroon,” wrote B. Lip. However, for Hersabey, “Samuel Eto’o’s behavior is a disgrace. He is aggressive, contemptuous, insolent. He behaves like a dictator. On top of that, Brys is older and his calm demeanor makes his behavior even more pathetic.” Inno Oupoh, on the other hand, questions the process of appointing Marc Brys. Strong support for Samuel Eto’o
“Do you think in Belgium or France a minister can appoint a staff instead of the federation? And do you think someone can disrespect a legend? The president of the French Football Federation respects Zidane, they forced him to resign,” he recalls.
Ludovic Bekou noted an important detail of this altercation, namely the words of the president of the FECAFOOT. “What the coach does, the Fecafoot assumes it!” We saw how people stoned Eto’o after the AFCON. You choose a staff and later you want Eto’o to bear the burden of their failures. Let him work! For heaven’s sake,” he demands. Nsomotovic, on the other hand, highlights a deeper malaise. “There is absolutely everything that sums up the chronic problems in Cameroon. Egocentrism. Mismanagement. Unhealthy competition between institutions. No ethics and decency. No sense of management on both sides. Imagine the other ministries,” he notes.
Stan, on his part, wonders “why all this is being filmed?”. Ankh supports the former FC Barcelona player: “Thank you Samuel Eto’o Fils, a worthy son of Africa! No white person comes to disrespect us in our own land! And all these corrupt ministers, why are they so involved in the appointment of this coach? We want answers! This is about Cameroonian org money!,” he comments under the quickly viral video. Tabi, however, disagrees with Samuel Eto’o. “This gentleman is very emotional. He cannot govern anyone in front of cameras, he is always in voyeurism. It’s distressing, it’s like he’s fighting against himself,” he believes.
