CAN 2027: CAF makes a major announcement that raises concerns

On the eve of the Executive Committee (Comex) meeting of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), set for this Friday in Dar es Salaam, a major rumor is stirring up continental football: the possible postponement of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 to the year 2028.

According to several sources close to the matter, this shift would be part of a broader effort to sustainably reorganize the competition’s calendar. The idea is to adopt a four-year rhythm, similar to the Euro in Europe or the Copa América in South America. If this direction is approved, the 2028 edition would officially kick off this new cycle, while still keeping East Africa as the host region.

CAN 2027 : la CAF fait une annonce majeure qui inquiète

The trio of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, initially designated to host AFCON 2027, would thus retain the organization of the tournament. The final decision should be officially announced after the Comex deliberations.

This potential reform aims to better harmonize the international competition calendar and provide more clarity for major continental events. It also fits into a context where CAF seeks to optimize logistics, improve sports infrastructure preparation, and enhance media coverage of African competitions, in order to strengthen their appeal and global reach.
