Argentina–Egypt: Eto’o Breaks Silence on the Controversy

Samuel Eto’o’s comments on the accusations against Argentina after their victory over Egypt in the World Cup have sparked a heated debate. While many fans and observers continue to criticize certain refereeing decisions and the use of VAR, the former captain of the Indomitable Lions takes a radically different stance. For him, football cannot be reduced to a single refereeing decision, no matter how controversial it may be. He believes critics too easily forget the overall flow of the match and how Egypt let go of a comfortable lead.

According to Samuel Eto’o, discussions about refereeing take up too much space and prevent a real analysis of the reasons behind Egypt’s defeat. The former Cameroonian star argues that the match’s outcome is primarily explained by the shift in momentum after the Pharaohs took a two-goal lead. In his view, Argentina gradually raised their game while Egypt lost control, giving their opponents the chance to come back and ultimately win.

Argentina–Egypt: Eto’o breaks his silence on the controversy

“Enough with the excuses. I’ve listened to people complain about the referee, VAR, and conspiracy theories for hours. Where was all that energy when Egypt was leading 2–0? Nobody was shouting ‘fixed match’ at that moment. The narrative only changed because Argentina came back and won.

“People need to stop insulting football. Every time a big team wins a tough match, some fans immediately cry ‘robbery’. It’s becoming embarrassing. If you lose your focus, stop defending properly, and let a team like Argentina back into the game, don’t blame the referee for your own collapse.

“And let’s talk about this supposed penalty that everyone keeps mentioning. For me, it wasn’t even a penalty. I’ve seen much more violent tackles ignored without VAR intervention. Yet somehow, people want to build an entire conspiracy theory around one decision. It’s emotion, not analysis.

“What really decided the match? Argentina started playing with intensity, personality, and conviction. Egypt stopped controlling the game. That’s football. Momentum shifts. Great teams punish mistakes. You can’t waste a two-goal lead and then claim the whistle is the only reason for your defeat.

“I’m tired of hearing that the World Cup is ‘given’ to Argentina. If you really believe FIFA chooses champions before the tournament even starts, then why do players run, fight, and sacrifice themselves for 90 minutes? These accusations disrespect all the footballers on that pitch.

“The easiest thing after a defeat is to attack the referee. The hardest is to look in the mirror and admit you lost control of the match. Egypt was brilliant for part of the game, but Argentina was better when it really mattered. That’s the truth many people don’t want to hear.

“Cut the decisions if you want, it’s part of football. But don’t hide behind referees and VAR every time your team loses. Sometimes, the real reason is simple: the opponent was stronger in the decisive moments. Accept it, improve, and come back stronger instead of creating stories with no evidence behind them.”
