Senegal has secured its place in the Round of 16 at the World Cup after a fiercely contested group stage. The Lions clinched their ticket as one of the best third-placed teams, thanks to a resounding victory over Iraq (5-0). This success, combined with a last-minute draw between Egypt and Iran, marked by a very marginal offside call on an Iranian goal, kept Senegal alive in the tournament despite a rocky start.

However, Senegal’s situation remains closely tied to the final results of the group stage and the ranking calculations for third-placed teams. Several scenarios continue to evolve based on the remaining matches, making it impossible to know for sure who their opponent will be. Current projections place Senegal in various configurations, with potential matchups changing depending on the final makeup of the best third-placed teams advancing to the knockout stage.

Round of 16: a new major challenge awaits the Lions

A crucial factor is the Democratic Republic of Congo, still in the running to be among the best third-placed teams. If the Leopards qualify, it would significantly change the matchups. In that case, Senegal’s odds would tilt towards facing the top team from Group G or Group K, depending on the combinations.
