World Cup: Thierry Henry reacts to Portugal’s elimination

Thierry Henry shares his analysis after Portugal’s elimination from the World Cup

After Portugal’s exit from the FIFA World Cup, Thierry Henry offered a blunt analysis of the reasons behind this failure. For the former French international, the Portuguese squad had enough talent to go far in the tournament, but they never managed to showcase their true collective potential.

“I’m going to say something that a lot of Portuguese supporters probably don’t want to hear.

This Portugal team has massively underperformed.

Not because they lacked talent, but because too many of their key players never reached the level everyone expected,” Thierry Henry stated.

According to the analyst, several senior Portuguese players didn’t meet the expectations placed on them during the tournament. He specifically mentions Bruno Fernandes, usually seen as one of the driving forces of this team.

“Bruno Fernandes was catastrophic, by his own standards, throughout this World Cup. The creativity, leadership, and decisive actions we’ve been used to for years were simply absent,” he explained.

Thierry Henry also focused on Vitinha and João Neves. The two Paris Saint-Germain midfielders arrived with great confidence after winning the Champions League with their club. However, according to Henry, their impact didn’t live up to expectations with the national team.

“Then there’s Vitinha and João Neves — just Champions League winners with PSG. Two midfielders who dominated Europe. Yet, in this tournament, they were almost invisible. They were missing when Portugal needed control, calm, and personality,” he continued.

The former Arsenal striker then mentioned Cristiano Ronaldo, often criticized after Portugal’s major eliminations. But Thierry Henry refuses to place the blame for this failure solely on the Portuguese captain.

“And then there’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

People will blame him because it’s the easy solution.

Not me,” he asserted.

For Henry, the decision to start Ronaldo had to come with a game plan that suited the qualities of the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. He believes Portugal didn’t create the necessary conditions for their historic scorer to make a difference.

“Because if you decide to start Cristiano, you have to create game situations that suit him. Instead, Portugal strung together passes without real intention. They had one of the greatest finishers in history in the box, yet they rarely served him in the conditions he needs to shine. It’s not Ronaldo’s fault. It’s the fault of the team around him,” he analyzed.

On the other hand, Thierry Henry praised Spain’s performance, which he sees as a perfectly organized team true to its principles.

They played with a clear identity from the first to the last minute. Every player knew their role. Every movement had a specific purpose,” he said.

To conclude, Henry believes the difference between the two teams wasn’t in the individual quality of the players, but in their ability to function as a true collective.

“Portugal, on the other hand, looked like eleven talented players trying to solve the match’s problems individually rather than collectively.

That’s why Spain is still in this World Cup.

And that’s why Portugal is going home.

Not because they had worse players…

But because they never played like a better team,” Thierry Henry concluded.
