Egypt experienced a significant setback during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, getting eliminated in the round of 16 by the Democratic Republic of Congo after a nail-biting penalty shootout (1-1, 7-8 on penalties).
This disappointing performance led to Rui Vitoria stepping down from his position as the national team’s coach.
Contrary to the swirling rumors about Hervé Renard possibly taking up the role, Hossam Hassan, a legendary figure in Egyptian football, was ultimately appointed as the head coach. Boasting 176 caps and 69 goals, he stands as one of the most decorated and prolific players in the history of the Egyptian national team. Hassan brings to the table previous experience in managing a national team with Jordan from 2013 to 2014, alongside coaching various renowned Egyptian clubs such as Al Masry, Zamalek, and Pyramids. The Egyptian Football Association also announced that Ibrahim Hassan, Hossam’s twin brother, would serve as his assistant in this new endeavor.
“Hervé Renard was never approached”

The idea of Hervé Renard taking over the Egyptian national team was appealing to fans, but it appears this possibility was never seriously considered. This was revealed by Amr Nageeb Fahmy, a journalist for beIN Sport, through his X account: “Hervé Renard was never approached by the Egyptian federation.
His name was floated in the media to soothe the supporters and reduce public pressure following Egypt’s failure at the CAN.” The professional future of Hervé Renard, who currently holds the position of coach for the French women’s team until the Paris Olympics this summer, remains uncertain. Although Algeria has shown keen interest in him, the federation is looking to appoint a coach who is immediately available. This requirement makes Renard’s candidacy for the position unlikely, given his current commitments.
