Egypt coach Hossam Hassan has not included Mohamed Salah in his squad for the upcoming FIFA international break, following a request from the player himself.

On Sunday, Hossam Hassan revealed his 25-man squad for the Winsunited Cup, a friendly tournament in the United Arab Emirates, without including captain Mohamed Salah. At a press conference, Hossam Hassan’s twin brother Ibrahim clarified that the decision to leave Salah at Liverpool to continue his recovery was in accordance with the striker’s wishes.

Salah is currently recovering from a muscle injury sustained in a league match three weeks ago. “We did not rule out Mohamed Salah; it was he who wished not to take part,” stressed the member of the coaching staff, despite unsuccessful attempts to contact the 31-year-old a few days earlier.

“Mohamed Salah is a valuable player and the captain of Egypt. He preferred to stay with Liverpool to follow his rehabilitation programme,” he added. “We would have liked to count on Salah, especially as this is our debut with the national team, but we respected his request as a technical staff.

We hope to see Salah join the Egyptian team for the matches against Guinea and Burkina Faso in June, during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, as he plays a crucial role and represents a major asset for the team.”

After missing several matches, Salah made two appearances, firstly on Thursday against Sparta Prague in the Europa League (5-1 win), then on Sunday against Manchester City in the Premier League (1-1 draw). Meanwhile, the Pharaohs are preparing to play New Zealand in Abu Dhabi on 22 March.
