A terrible threat looms over Spanish football!

According to Spanish media reports, UEFA might expel Liga clubs as well as the Spanish national team from its competitions. Here’s the explanation.

Amidst turmoil, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is set to be placed under trusteeship, as announced by the government of the southern European country. Following scandals involving Luis Rubiales and his interim president Pedro Rocha, the government deemed swift action necessary.

“The Spanish government has made this decision to address the serious situation of the RFEF and allow it to begin a period of renewal in a climate of stability,” communicated the Higher Sports Council (CSD), an entity under the Ministry of Sports, on its website. The aim is for a supervisory commission to oversee the federation in the coming months. According to AS, the government is considering appointing Vicente del Bosque as the president of the RFEF. At 73 years old, the former coach of the Spanish national team is familiar with the organization, having led Spain to victory in the 2010 World Cup. Elections for the presidency of the Federation are scheduled for May 6th, with Pedro Rocha currently the only officially declared candidate.

However, this intervention by the Spanish government could come at a cost to its clubs. Indeed, as explained by several media outlets such as AS and Marca, UEFA is closely monitoring the Iberian government’s interference in this matter. UEFA refuses to allow governments to intervene at this level.

UEFA could thus expel all Spanish clubs from its European competitions, potentially depriving teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid of the Champions League. The Spanish national team could also face a ban from tournaments organized by the institution governing European football, such as the Euro. In Spain, this issue seems to be taken very seriously, and it appears not to be mere speculation or empty threats…
