Real Madrid have not had the best start to the 2025 season, dropping from first to third in the La Liga table since the beginning of January
They were also soundly beaten in the Spanish Super Cup by Barcelona, although it is their league form that has been the most worrying. Last weekend’s defeat to Real Betis left its mark. According to Diario AS, Carlo Ancelotti reflected on the defeat at the Benito Villamarin, from which he believes his team have already recovered.
“I was disappointed with the game. I thought the team was in good shape, I didn’t expect this slump. But it was isolated. I don’t think players choose games, I think in such a demanding season the wear and tear is very high. Sometimes you can think that you’re not 100% in every game. The momentum was good and we reacted well. We’re back on track.”
Ancelotti was also asked about the criticism Kylian Mbappe received after his performance against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League earlier this week.
“He’s good but…”+
“Against Atletico, he didn’t do what he did against City. In general, he’s doing very well, we’re very happy with him. We have to keep in mind that he’s not always at his best. The season is demanding, it’s normal, especially for quality players, they have more ups and downs, it’s something genetic. He’s doing very well. If we’re in the last 16 of the Champions League, it will be a lot for him, he scored four goals in the match.”
Another player who has caught the eye this season is Eduardo Camavinga, but Ancelotti expects the midfielder to return to his best soon. “He has not had continuity, he has had important injuries. He has been on the bench for three and a half months, which makes continuity more difficult. He is improving little by little, he has had back pain in recent games that has not allowed him to play at 100%. He has endured because of the needs of the team. He will return to his best.”
