Kylian Mbappé will play a crucial match with Real Madrid before facing Atlético. But before the meeting, painful news arrived.
Polish referee Szymon Marciniak has been appointed to officiate the return match between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid, scheduled for this Wednesday, in the Champions League round of 16 second leg.
Marciniak, considered the best referee by UEFA, has been chosen for this very tense and balanced clash. As for his record with both teams, Real Madrid have won four games, lost three and drawn two with him, while Atlético have recorded seven wins and one defeat under his refereeing.
Marciniak, referee of the 2022 final lost by France
The only precedent between these two teams with Marciniak dates back to the 2018 Super Cup, where Atlético triumphed 4-2 after extra time, with Julen Lopetegui at the helm of Real Madrid. The latter has also refereed several high-profile matches, such as a Real Madrid – Atalanta (2-3 for the Madrilenians) and a Real Madrid – Bayern last season, where Joselu scored two decisive goals. This season, he has directed a PSG – Atlético, with a crucial goal from Correa, as well as an Atlético victory against Inter in a penalty shootout the previous season.
But Szymon Marciniak is above all associated with a painful memory for Kylian Mbappé. It was indeed he who was on the pitch in Doha during the 2022 World Cup final, to officiate during the France – Argentina clash. A match where Kylian Mbappé shone with a fabulous hat-trick, but above all with the very painful memory of losing the world trophy to the Argentinians of Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez…
