The race for the 2024 Ballon d’Or is heating up. According to Olivier Brossard, a writer for France Football, three players stand out as favorites to succeed Lionel Messi:
Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Jr, and Jude Bellingham. “Being eliminated in the Copa America quarterfinals won’t make us forget everything he has done this season. He secured the Champions League for Real Madrid with a goal against Dortmund. He was also immense in La Liga,” explains Olivier Brossard about Vinicius Jr.
Despite Brazil’s early exit in the Copa America, the Brazilian remains a Ballon d’Or favorite thanks to his exceptional season with Real Madrid.
Having achieved a Liga-Champions League double, the young winger has shone through his performances and now asserts himself as one of the best players in the world.
Kylian Mbappé, despite a disappointing Euro 2024, remains a serious contender for the Ballon d’Or.
His performances in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, where he notably excelled with PSG before joining Real Madrid, speak in his favor. Jude Bellingham is the breakout star of the season. The young English midfielder delivered outstanding performances with Real Madrid and has emerged as one of the best players in his position.
At just 20 years old, he already seems ready to compete with the greatest. “Bellingham is here, Mbappé, Vinicius too. I had Toni Kroos in the mix, but this elimination in the Euro quarterfinals will likely hinder him,” says Olivier Brossard, a journalist at France Football.
On the other hand, Toni Kroos, initially considered a favorite, sees his chances compromised following Germany’s early exit in the Euro 2024 quarterfinals.
His lack of a major title with the national team could cost him dearly.
The Ballon d’Or will be awarded in the coming months. The trio of Mbappé-Vinicius-Bellingham seems to have the edge, but other contenders like Dani Carvajal or Fede Valverde could still spring a surprise.
