In search of a new coach to replace Thomas Tuchel, Bayern Munich struggled for a while. However, the Bavarians are finally closing in on their target.

The identity of Thomas Tuchel’s successor is starting to take shape. There were doubts about the possibility of Xabi Alonso or Julian Nagelsmann arriving this summer, as both coaches were approached by the Bavarian management.

However, the former declined to continue his journey with Bayer Leverkusen, while the latter extended his contract with the German federation to lead the national team until 2026. Subsequently, rumors surfaced about Unai Emery (Aston Villa) or even Zinedine Zidane. But they were not the favorites, as Ralf Rangnick emerged as the frontrunner.

Rangnick, a coach who has the advantage of speaking the language fluently and having a profound knowledge of the Bundesliga, is poised to take over. Currently in charge of the Austrian national team, he is expected to lead the transition at Bayern Munich, barring a major twist, as reported by Bild on Wednesday. According to the newspaper, the former Manchester United coach has informed Bayern Munich of his desire to take the reins of the Rekordmeister. Discussions are set to intensify on Wednesday with hopes of reaching an agreement swiftly.

However, Bayern will have to convince Austria to release their coach, who is under contract until 2026. When asked about the matter, Bayern president Herbert Hainer confirmed that discussions were indeed underway, stating on Sky Sports, “we are on the right track with Ralf. He would be a very good choice for us.” Meanwhile, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen remained more cryptic, saying to Kicker, “it’s like weather forecasts: sometimes showers come in April when we least expect them, sometimes the sun arrives in May.”

Apparently, the skies are clearing up in May after several setbacks. German fans are hopeful for an imminent announcement. However, Kicker specifies that it is unlikely to happen before the second leg against Real Madrid on May 8. This was acknowledged by sporting director Max Eberl, who said, “We want planning security, which we will ensure internally. But the two matches against Real are fundamentally important for the best possible season.” So, we’ll have to wait until after the semi-finals, or perhaps a bit longer, for Bayern Munich to definitively close this deal after reaching an agreement with Rangnick and the Austrian federation.
