After several days of internal discussions, the Bayern management has finally unanimously settled on a profile to succeed Thomas Tuchel at the helm of the Bavarian club.
While Bayer Leverkusen celebrates a well-deserved championship title, Bayern Munich is gearing up for a Hollywood-esque revenge plot. Besides letting go of the Bundesliga trophy for the first time in 12 years, the Bavarian club also suffered a disappointment in the DFB-Pokal with their elimination in the second round against Sarrebruck. Only the Champions League can salvage Bayern from a potentially trophy-less season (they drew 2-2 in the first leg against Arsenal in London). Consequently, German coach Thomas Tuchel is already set to leave at the end of the season. His departure was confirmed a few weeks ago, and the Bayern management seems to have agreed on the successor to the former PSG and Chelsea coach.
According to information from Sky Germany, Bayern is now in the final stages of finding their new coach: “The white smoke will rise at some point,” announced Max Eberl, a Bayern executive, last week on Prime Video in London regarding the internal discussions to find the future Munich coach. Already mentioned in recent weeks by the German press after Xabi Alonso’s contract extension at Leverkusen, Julian Nagelsmann, the current Germany coach, seems to have convinced everyone in the Bayern management. The 36-year-old tactician would supposedly be ready to take over as Bayern coach for the second time in his career next summer after the Euros at home (June 14 – July 14). An old Bayern hand to the rescue!
According to Sky Germany’s insights, Max Eberl, the new sporting director of Bayern, and Christoph Freund led the discussions and also handled negotiations with Julian Nagelsmann’s agency, Sports360. Max Eberl is the key figure in the search for coaches and believes that Julian Nagelsmann will have a successful fresh start with Bayern. The management is reportedly prepared to unconditionally support Nagelsmann in his potential sensational return while demanding absolute passion and performance. They were also in contact when the coach asked for precise explanations by phone before the last international break regarding the non-selection of Leon Goretzka. As a reminder, the coach from Landsberg am Lech had signed a five-season contract with Bayern for a record coach fee of 25 million euros before being surprisingly dismissed in March 2023.
Furthermore, according to the German media, besides Nagelsmann, Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton) and Unai Emery (Aston Villa) are still part of the possible Plan B list, unlike Ralf Rangnick, who is not on it. According to Sky Germany, there has also been no contact with the Bayern management and Zinedine Zidane in recent days, contrary to what the Spanish newspaper Marca had reported. The focus is now on fully engaging in negotiations with Nagelsmann, for whom honorary president Uli Hoeneß recently gave the green light. If Nagelsmann were to say yes to Bayern, it would be a significant blow to the German Football Association (DFB). Directors Bernd Neuendorf and Rudi Völler wanted to extend their national team coach’s contract until the 2026 World Cup included and would then need a new national team coach after next summer’s European Championship.
