Gareth Southgate has been urged by Ashley Cole to drop Bukayo Saka from the England team for their crucial Euro 2024 match against Slovenia.
Saka impressed in England’s opening match against Serbia, scoring Jude Bellingham’s goal. However, despite England’s win over Serbia and a draw against Denmark, the Three Lions have faced criticism for underperforming.
Saka has faced criticism for his performance on the wing, with many calling for him to be dropped by Southgate.
Ashley Cole on dropping Bukayo Saka:
Cole, a former England left-back, has called on Southgate to move Foden to the right and rest Saka, with Anthony Gordon replacing on the opposite wing.
Speaking to beIN Sports, as reported by The Sun, he said: “I would like to see Anthony Gordon play on the left, I would like to see Foden play on the right because I feel he has been unfairly omitted. You can always see it as a rest for Bukayo Saka. I would like Foden to show the world how good he is because we know.
I think he has been unfairly criticized for playing out of position. People might say ‘Well, he’s a world-class player, he should be able to adapt’. That’s true, I understand that.
But what I see of him playing for Man City, I would like to see him play there (on the right).”
England will face Slovenia in their final group match of the competition and will look to improve their performances ahead of the knockout stages.
