Marc Brys, the new coach of the Indomitable Lions, is set to make his debut on the Cameroon national team bench in June, facing Cape Verde (03/06) and Angola (10/06) in the continuation of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Belgian coach has dropped some hints about his inaugural squad.

Upon his return to the country on Friday evening, Brys told CRTV Sports, “We want the best players from the local league. We already have two or three names in mind, and we will talk to them.” At first glance, one might think of two players from Victoria United: attacking midfielder Nathan Douala — recently embroiled in controversy due to suspicions of age fraud (he is said to be 23, not 17) — and defender Emmanuel Moungan (18), who is being courted by FC Porto.

The former was surprisingly selected for the AFCON but did not make an appearance, while the latter has never been called up. If both talents are picked by Brys for his debut, it will demonstrate his intent to leverage the talents of the local league. However, Brys is still uncertain about his selections.

Appointed by the government without the approval of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fécafoot) led by Samuel Eto’o, the Belgian’s case is causing a stir in the country. His situation remains unresolved as he awaits official recognition from Eto’o as the new coach, and recent trends suggest that a resolution may not be imminent.

A meeting is scheduled between the two men on Tuesday at the initiative of Sports Minister Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, which could help ease tensions. However, there are increasing whispers that Eto’o, still aggrieved, may not honor this meeting. Eto’o’s absence from the meeting would undoubtedly exacerbate the crisis.
