At a time when football fans are divided between the Copa America and Euro 2024, some are concerned about Lionel Messi.
La Pulga is expected to sit out Argentina’s next Copa America match against Peru, with the captain set to be rested.
Why is Messi being rested?
The Albiceleste captain appeared to suffer from a hamstring issue during the 1-0 victory over Chile that secured qualification for the quarter-finals, despite playing the full match.
Messi was unable to provide specifics about his health after Scaloni’s team won two consecutive matches in the group stage, which did not allay growing concerns.
“I felt discomfort in my right hamstring early in the match,” said the Argentina captain after the win against Chile.
“It was tight. It wasn’t as loose as it should have been. But I was able to finish the match. We’ll see how it goes,” he added. Will Messi play against Peru?
According to ESPN, Messi will not take part in the defending champions’ final Group A match in Miami, allowing their captain to benefit from a well-deserved rest.
Changes were expected from Scaloni as the world and continental champions have already secured their place in the knockout stage.
What happens next?
While Messi could miss the Group A finale, it remains to be seen how the captain’s health will hold up for the remainder of the tournament as Argentina seeks to retain the crown they claimed in 2021.
