Potential blow: Spain is keeping an eye on Mbappé’s knee

Concern is growing in Spain about Kylian Mbappé’s health. The French forward is struggling with a knee injury, and his absence is set to stretch on, much to the dismay of Real Madrid, who may have to do without their star in the upcoming European fixtures.

Emilio Butragueño was in Nyon for the Champions League draw and didn’t hide his worries: “We hope it’s not serious. For now, his presence against Manchester City is uncertain. He is very important for us,” he said, leaving doubts hanging ahead of the round of 16.

Initially expected to be out for two weeks, Mbappé’s absence could now last nearly a month and a half. His return is only anticipated at the beginning of April, just in time for potential Champions League quarter-finals if Real Madrid continues their journey. Another source of concern is the club’s silence on the exact nature of the injury, while the Spanish press remains pessimistic. The daily Marca describes a player who is “disoriented” after such a long layoff, which is unusual for the forward.

Known for his physical reliability, Mbappé has rarely missed matches in his career, whether with Paris Saint-Germain or the French national team. He is disciplined in his training and lifestyle, having only faced a few muscle issues during the 2019-2020 season and occasional alerts the following season amid the pandemic.

This time, it all dates back to December 7, during a clash with Celta Vigo that affected his left knee. He returned to competition quickly, but it seems he came back too soon, worsening his injury. An MRI later revealed a ligament injury requiring at least three weeks of rest. True to his competitive spirit, Mbappé had gritted his teeth to play in the Spanish Supercup in Saudi Arabia, only to have to stop again.

This relapse now demands a prolonged recovery period, a heavy blow for Real Madrid and a major concern for Spanish football, as Mbappé’s influence has become central to the club’s ambitions.
