The Real Madrid goalkeeper responded to Diego Simeone, Atletico Madrid coach.
It’s proud of his players and at peace that Diego Simeone says he’s leaving the Champions League, but also, undoubtedly, with a hint of bitterness. This is certainly what his statements at the press conference demonstrated, as he insisted he didn’t personally see Julian Alvarez touch the ball with his second foot on his penalty kick.
“Who here (editor’s note: in the press room) saw Julian touch the ball twice? Raise your hand. Nobody? So, next question,” the Colchoneros coach led the press conference after the elimination against Real Madrid, while the Merengues coach said the replays were unequivocal.
Courtois annoyed
Another Madrid player who was asked to react to Diego Simeone’s comments was Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian is usually less tongue-tied than his coach, and he lived up to his reputation tonight as well.
“I think the referees saw the action clearly and made that decision. I’m fed up with the constant victimization and whining. Referees, whether in Spain or in Europe, don’t try to give anyone an advantage. They’re human beings who can make mistakes, but in the VAR room, they have a lot of screens and slow-motion replays. Maybe not trying to score the second goal was more of a mistake on his part,” the Madrid goalkeeper said in the mixed zone.
