Sadness and remorse were evident on Cristiano Ronaldo’s face at the Frankfort Arena, where the Round of 16 match between Portugal and Slovenia took place.

As the game headed towards a scoreless draw, the greatest player in Portugal’s history had a stroke of luck when he was awarded a penalty in extra time that could have changed the course of the match.

However, despite penalties being one of his specialties, Cristiano Ronaldo missed spectacularly this time, sending his shot straight into the gloves of Slovenian goalkeeper Oblak.

Nevertheless, Portugal gained the upper hand over their opponents thanks to goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who saved three Slovenian penalties during the shootout. This allowed Portugal to reach the quarter-finals.

The scene left a lasting memory for the player, who was in tears, consoled by his teammates.

Speaking to Portuguese channel Sport TV, the Al Nassr player expressed his emotions. “I could have given an advantage to the Seleção, but I couldn’t. Throughout the year, I haven’t missed once, and when I needed it most, Oblak saved.”

“It’s a feeling of sadness and joy at the same time, but the most important thing is the qualification; the team deserved it,” he continued.

He also commented on the upcoming match against France in the quarter-finals. “We will have a tough match against France, and we will fight. I will always do my best with this shirt. I will do this all my life. I have never been afraid to face things head-on, and giving up is something you will never hear associated with my name,” he declared.
