Last night, Dani Olmo went off injured against Osasuna in a postponed match of La Liga’s 27th matchday. Another hiccup that’s causing a stir…
Dani Olmo’s Barcelona adventure hasn’t been a bed of roses. It all began last summer when the Culés wanted to sign the footballer, who was then at RB Leipzig. The German club was open to his departure, but insisted he wouldn’t be sold for a bargain. Bad news for Barça, who were counting on every last euro. But after several offers and long weeks of waiting, everything fell into place. Olmo, who had a fantastic Euro with La Roja and was eagerly courted by Manchester City, was able to sign with the Blaugrana until 2030. All for a sum slightly over €60 million.
A few months later, the Spanish international was once again at the center of a new saga. Financially in the red, Barça had only registered him with La Liga for the first half of the season. But after several weeks of waiting, the Catalans were able to sign the 26-year-old for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. “Good news for FC Barcelona. Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor have been registered for La Liga and are therefore available for selection by coach Hansi Flick, including for the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday at 8 p.m. CET,” read the official website of the Spanish club.
A new injury
A relief for FCB and for the footballer, who could easily have signed elsewhere during the winter transfer window. He can now finish what he started with the Camp Nou team. Since his arrival, he has scored 8 goals and provided 5 assists in 28 appearances in all competitions, including 16 as a starter. His last appearance was last night. He was in the starting eleven against Osasuna, in a postponed match of the 27th La Liga match. A match during which he also scored the goal to make it 2-0 in the 21st minute of play from a penalty.
But he had to come off a few moments later, in the 28th minute, due to muscle discomfort in his adductors. This annoyed Hansi Flick, who said after the match: “It wasn’t the best day to play, and we paid for it with Olmo’s injury. I leave with a bitter taste in my mouth. (…) It wasn’t the right time, but we won, even if we paid a heavy price. Olmo’s injury isn’t good. He’ll be out for two or three weeks. It’s not a good situation. We paid a heavy price for this victory.”
Barça is concerned
He added: “We have to listen to the players and the coaches. The schedule is very busy. I don’t think it’s an optimal situation. That’s my humble opinion. We can make a lot of money, but it’s not good for the players. We have to reflect on this situation and think about the players.” The fans want a show, and if we continue like this, we won’t be able to continue playing at this level.” Flick is losing Olmo at an important time of the season, between the race for La Liga and the quarter-finals of the Champions League. This isn’t the first time this season that Barça will have to do without him.
Since arriving at Barça, this is the third time he’s been sidelined, according to Transfermarkt. Between September 16 and October 17, he missed 32 days of competition and eight matches due to a muscle injury. Then, he suffered a sprain in January. He was out for 19 days and five matches. Finally, his new muscle injury, which he sustained yesterday, is expected to cause him to miss two to three weeks of competition. Olmo, who has played only “36.3% of his possible minutes” this season, according to AS, is a serious concern for Barça. The Spanish club didn’t expect him to be so physically weakened.
