The atmosphere in the French national team’s locker room is tense, despite qualifying for the Euro 2024 round of 16.
For the first time in a while, there are cracks in the relationship between Didier Deschamps and Olivier Giroud.
The French manager no longer counts on the 37-year-old striker, who is playing his final tournament in the colors of France.
According to reports from L’Équipe, Didier Deschamps is believed to have stated that Giroud is now incapable of lifting the team up.
“Giroud is not able to lift the team up,” said the coach of the French team, as quoted by L’Équipe.
This statement seems to have greatly displeased France’s all-time leading goalscorer. Throughout Euro 2024 so far, Giroud has mostly been left on the bench, often coming on in the second half.
Once a preferred choice by Didier Deschamps as France’s main striker, Giroud now appears to be gradually moving away from his coach’s plans.
Despite being the new recruit for Los Angeles FC, Giroud continues to dream of reclaiming his starting spot before the end of the European tournament.
He is expected to start again on the bench for France’s match against Belgium in the Euro 2024 round of 16.
